The Supreme Court Center Stage

This week, the Supreme Court will hear the Florida challenge to the health insurance reform President Obama spearheaded. I think it could go either way, but I suspect that the individual mandate – if not other provisions – will be stricken as unconstitutional. Whatever the decision, I doubt it will be unanimous – probably 5 to 4.

Regardless, if it is upheld, the right will say that the court is filled with "lefties," etc. If not, the left will say the court's out of touch. Not to despair. There are constitutional paths that have been set up for both sides to agitate their position.

Furthermore, if parts are stricken, many on the right will use it as a mantra to rid the country of a president who has no regard for the Constitution. Along those lines, let me ask this: Which political party, president, and state has had the most Supreme Court rulings against them? Did that mean that, that party, president, or state government should have been turned out as disregarding the constitution?

We have a system – although it rarely satisfies everyone – that works like it was meant to work.
