It is an interesting phenomenon: In an economic crises (regardless of the reality of its cause) incumbency is a liability. In a war (also, often regardless of the reality of its cause) the public rallies to the defense of its current leaders. In the grand scheme of things, which has the greatest potential for harm?
In a recession, we have more capacity to advance our economic prospects. However, we are almost powerless to waylay a war once an unwise leader has unleashed our forces. For this reason, I say, fear the man more who would rally you to war, than the alleged perpetrator of our own economic undoing; for while our presidents have a minimal effect upon our commerce, they can, with a single command, take us to war.
