John Swallow is running his campaign for Utah Attorney General on the "[w]e-must-sell-all-the-public-land-to-my-business-cronies," slogan. Instead of learning to live within our means, budgeting, showing fiscal conservancy, and using tax dollars wisely, he wants to sell our children's inheritance to his political contributors. Right-wing pundits gripe that Democrats buy votes by giving entitlements to the poor. Well, many conservative pretenders buy votes through doling out assets to the rich.
Conservatism isn't about declaring war on other countries, or on the people’s public land and then, in political land grabs, giving it away to your cronies. It's about living responsibly. Our public lands are a finite, indispensable resource. Keep them public, where it makes sense. Allow limited leasing rights. Preserve them in as pristine condition as possible, as a lifeline to the abundant diversity of our beautiful and rich lands.
