I won my case today! (I got a traffic ticket for an illegal u-turn. And yes, I was innocent as the day is long.) I represented myself, so I had a fool for a client. However, this time it worked out. Usually it does not.
Most people, even very knowledgeable people, need an attorney to assist them. This is not necessarily due to the complexities of the law, but due to the inability to think rationally and logically, and to form an appropriate strategic plan to resolve the legal issue. Most get too emotionally close to their legal problem to do this. Therefore, you don't want a hired gun, nor an attorney who is just a mask for the fool behind it.
What you need is an advocate who is a teacher, who can use the tools of the law and the provable facts to show everyone, you, the judge, the opposing counsel, and the jury what the proper outcome should be.
