If we still lived in a world when self-reliance could be subsidized by simply taking what was readily available – land, resources, flora and fauna – without having to worry it belonged to some other person or entity, or the taking did not have other irreconcilable adverse consequences, the need for a public safety net would be minimal.
However, in a more crowded world, where most land, resources, flora and fauna cannot be easily expropriated without intruding on property rights or inhibiting sustainability, it is in our self-interest to provide both a modest safety net against poverty and a sufficient springboard to opportunity.
