Today, on NPR, William H. Macy, the star of Shameless, was interviewed. Regarding the acting process, he stated that one should forget all the methods and processes. All you have to do is “act” and say something like you just made it up. He also said that acting must be an innate or God-given talent. Someone blessed with natural ability, who has been acting for several months, will usually be better than someone with no natural ability who has been studying acting for many years.
I heard this same statement a few years ago from Billy Bob Thornton, who indicated that he had more talent in his little finger than many people do in their entire bodies when it came to acting.
This is kind of discouraging for a person who has been “studying it” for several years.
I think there is truth to what Macy has to say, but this is what is often stated by many people who have innate abilities in other areas, and who cannot relate to those of us who have to work at things.
However, there is hope. There are many examples of people who have had to “work at things,” who have become great musicians, artists, athletes, and sometimes even actors. I am sure I'll think of a few when I have some time.
