La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, presents a story in stylized anachronism that lacks a B-story (subplot). There really are no other characters in the movie other than the two main stars. (The rest are just scattered cameos of characters who were just representative of the ones among the motley millions in the Hollywood rat race.) There is no “happy ending,” because neither the guy nor the girl “gets” the girl or the guy.
Nevertheless, it all works – seamlessly and beautifully! How?
It leaves you speculating about the meaning of “happy ending”: Maybe that happy ending is that the guy and the girl – while they didn’t “get” each other – still achieved their dream. And though they didn’t end up “together,” they did help each other make it to the top, and they still loved and respected each other because of, and in spite of it.
Maybe that’s a happy ending, after all.
