I grew up in a faith that teaches that there must be opposition in all things – such as hot and cold, good and evil, and light and dark.
Disappointingly, many think this means that those who stand in opposition stand on the side of evil. To the contrary, it means that tension between opposites often creates healthy balance.
Without that tension, without the opposition, the side which predominates becomes despotic and evil. Their touted virtues become vices when allowed free reign without any check or balance. For example, this tension occurs between the competing interests of security and liberty, freedom of religion and freedom from religion, etc.
Before you think that nirvana would be reached when all the people of the same thought found themselves together to govern, understand that those who think differently, who stand in opposition, bring balance. This is because there must be opposition in all things – all things – even in politics.
That's what makes us strong.
