I heard it preached by the oracles, and I bought into it and said it myself. I wrote it in the stones, sang it to the stars, and then whispered it in my sleep: "Misery loves company." However, it is a lie that is as dangerous as the harm against which it seeks to insulate us. I knew it when I was miserable, but did not acknowledge it. Maybe you know, or will know it.
If you don’t want to be miserable, don’t embrace misery. Yes, corruption exerts its corruptive influence. Yes, teach your children well, but remember: Misery does not love company; people do (if they still have a beating heart in their bodies).
Misery is only misery, no matter what your station. If people are miserable, due to heartache, illness, injury, bad choices, addiction, and being shunned, they will seek comfort when and where they can. God bless them for doing what is within our natures to do. Who are we to blame them, if, in seeking company and companionship, they are pushed further into the arms of misery?
With the exception of those you cannot safely blanket with your association, insulate the ones you can with your love and attention. Let heartache, illness, sin, and addiction – if that is what they truly are – be their own punishment, for misery does not love anything nor seek anything; people do, and people love and need other people.
