This weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Astronomy Festival at Bryce Canyon. My family and I attended a couple lectures from astronomists, went on a ranger-guided rim walk, and of course, hiked throughout the park.
Our favorite part of the weekend was attending the sky gazing, where a couple dozen members of the Utah Astronomy Association brought their telescopes that were focused on various celestial bodies. We viewed Jupiter; globe, whorl, spiral and cluster galaxies; and two beautiful-twined red and yellow stars. It’s a humbling and enriching experience to gaze into history and contemplate our place in the universe.
All I can say is bravo to Bryce Canyon’s U.S. Rangers and Utah Astronomy Association volunteers. It was an amazing weekend, made possible though the partnership of the rangers and volunteers.
It was a testament to government when it works well, and a testament that volunteers need to be enlisted in the effort.
